The DC Metro Area has seen declines in homelessness since 2019 but recently has experienced an overall increase of 18% in 2023, totaling nearly 9,000 individuals experiencing homelessness. For the first time in five years, D.C. has experienced an increase in homelessness. The challenges related to accessing healthcare and social services compound the health risks faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and amplify the probability of negative health consequences. Homeless individuals frequently encounter obstacles in obtaining treatment and preventive care due to factors like lack of insurance, transportation, and affordability. These barriers result in increased reliance on emergency services and a higher likelihood of hospitalizations for severe ailments. Furthermore, inadequate support upon discharge from healthcare facilities into unsuitable settings leads to elevated readmission rates and unfavorable health outcomes.
Operation Golden Shield will meet the immediate needs of homeless individuals and individuals residing in the Coalition for the Homeless homeless shelter located in Washington D.C. Dental Hygiene Kits will be constructed and hand delivered by the OGS team to individuals residing in the DC Metro Area and to the Coalition for the Homeless in an effort to .
