Honduras is a democracy with a developing economy, with large segments of the country missing basic public services or a governmental presence. The population faces major issues around health care services, street crime and public safety, and political instability. The health care system in Honduras is among the worst in the Western hemisphere, with up to 30 percent of the population with no access to medical care. The quality of medical facilities and support staff varies greatly, with many areas lacking general surgery hospitals and capacity for advanced surgical procedures, with very limited emergency medical response capabilities. In order to help address the many needs of the health care system, Operation Golden Shield will conduct a 2-week pre-trip fundraising campaign to raise financial resources to support various organizations throughout Honduras. Site visits will then be conducted to learn more about the missions and activities of each and direct financial contributions will be made to support increased medical capacities throughout several major cities in Honduras:
