For the first time in five years, D.C. has experienced an increase in homelessness. The challenges related to accessing healthcare and social services compound the health risks faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and amplify the probability of negative health consequences. Homeless individuals frequently encounter obstacles in obtaining treatment and preventive care due to factors like lack of insurance, transportation, and affordability. Veterans living in VA nursing homes – called Community Living Centers (CLC) – are a particularly vulnerable population at high risk for complications. The Emery Low Barrier Shetler also provides 130 beds on a nightly basis, as well as access to case management services, showers, and food.
Operation Golden Shield will meet the immediate needs of the Veterans and residents at the Washington DC VA Medical Center’s Community Living Center and Emery Low Barrier Shelter by delivering a requested list of high-priority items in individually packed care packages. The OGS team will also facilitate a fun community event to energize the Vienna community around our mission.
