Over 35,000 veterans experience homelessness on any given day in the United States. In the D.C./VA/MD area alone, roughly 1,200 homeless veterans suffer through the harsh winter months without shelter and limited supplies. Homeless and elderly veterans who are food insecure are a particularly vulnerable population at high risk for complications.
The D.C. OGS team will meet the immediate needs of the veterans who currently reside in the VA's transitional housing units. Winter clothing bundles consisting of hats, gloves, socks, and blankets, in addition to hygiene kits filled with hand sanitizer and toiletries will fill our "Winter Survival Kits" to help our nation's warriors get through the cold Winter months.
The Operation Golden Shield team successfully packed and delivered over 100 Winter Survival Kits to veterans residing in three separate VAMC transitional housing units in Washington D.C.
