Over 35,000 veterans experience homelessness on any given day in the United States. In Detroit and the surrounding area alone, roughly 1,800 homeless veterans suffer through the harsh Michigan Winters on minimal supplies. The lives of homeless veterans in the Detroit area have been further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, making it more difficult to get Winter necessities to make it through the cold months.
The Michigan OGS committee will assemble and distribute care packages to the Volunteers of America Detroit Veterans Housing Program location in Detroit. These survival kits will consist of winter essentials identified by the Volunteers of America such as gloves, hats, hand warmers, hygiene kits, and thermal blankets.
Detroit's Operation Golden Shield Winter Survival Mission was completed, with over 50 care packages filled with sustenance, warmth, and hygiene items delivered to homeless veterans in need of these essential items.
