Over 35,000 veterans experience homelessness on any given day in the United States. In the D.C./VA/MD area alone, roughly 1,200 homeless veterans suffer through the harsh winter months without shelter and limited supplies. In the VA health care system, there have been over 130,000 cases treated for COVID with over 18,000 active cases and over 5,500 known deaths (as of December 2020). Homeless and elderly veterans who are food insecure are a particularly vulnerable population at high risk for complications.
Our team of community leaders from the DC metro area will meet the immediate needs of the veterans who now reside in the VA's transitional housing units, in addition to homeless participants in the streets of DC. Hygiene items, winter clothing, and sustenance will fill "Winter Survival Kits" to help our nation's warriors get through the cold Winter months.
Operation Golden Shield and the United Soldiers and Sailors of America successfully packed and delivered hundreds of hot meals and 200 Winter Survival Kits to veterans within the VA's transitional housing units and on the streets.
We want to thank our partners at the United Soldiers and Sailors of America for facilitating this event. Together We Can. Find more at their website:
